Dana's Story

  • Print
Can you make your dreams come true? A Sheboygan woman did. Now she's sharing her story to inspire others. Dana Fischer wanted just one thing: To lose enough weight to realize her dream of becoming a police officer... like her dad. So when she was a senior in college, she made the decision to get healthy. "I was looking at pictures and just saw a picture of me, and that picture just clicked in my head that I had a very serious problem," she told us candidly. The "diet" was simple, and familiar. Diet and exercise. "I was anal about the food I ate and what I consumed," she admitted. But it worked. In about a year, she had shed 120 pounds. And recently, she just completed her first half-marathon. "This is what I wanted to work for, this was the ultimate thing that I wanted to do," Dana said as she patrolled the streets of Sheboygan in her squad car. That achievement wasn't the end, though. One day her phone rang. On the other end of the line: a producer from The Rachael Ray Show. "She said what's something else you HAVEN'T done, something we can do for you," Dana recalled. That "something" was wearing a bikini. So the show flew Dana to Hawaii... where she not only wore a two-piece, but also got to meet an idol: Valerie Bertinelli. "It was the best experience of my life. It really was. They granted that wish and I would have never been able to do otherwise," Dana said. She admits it isn't easy keeping the weight off. Especially in her line of work-- police work. "It's a constant battle every day to make sure that I'm watching what I'm eating and that I'm not gonna let myself go," she told us. That includes packing a healthy lunch and dinner every day. But her real weight loss secret: The motivation has to come from within. "Every person is worth it, they just have to make that decision to put themself first," she told us candidly. Now, she's concentrating on her future. Dana agreed to be interviewed in the hopes of inspiring other people to take that first step... and get healthier. She also says she's thinking about starting a blog to offer advice.
