"Drowning Pool" At Summerfest
By George Mallet
MILWAUKEE - It’s seven o’clock. The members of Drowning Pool have four hours before they take the stage at Summerfest.
Drummer Mike Luce and singer Ryan McCombs are seated in dressing room number two behind the Zippo stage. They’ve been asked their thoughts about the term so often applied to their genre of heavy rock: “nu-metal.”
“I don’t really like that term,” McCombs says. “It was always associated with rap metal.”
“Which is fine,” Luce chimes in. “But that’s not us. We’re a rock band.”
They are indeed a rock band. But, unlike the other bands saddled with that “nu-metal” label, Drowning Pool is still around.
Their brand of loud wailing guitars combined with thundering bass vocals has survived and thrived. Their 2001 hit “Bodies” from their debut album “Sinner” continues to get play on heavy rock radio stations.
The members of this Texas band aren’t only aficionados of their own brand of rock. One of the things they enjoy about Summerfest is the chance to see lots of other acts.
McCombs sounds somewhat star struck as he runs down the lineup. “You got Three Dog Night, and you’ve got Stevie Wonder,” he says smiling.
“LeAnn Rimes and Cowboy Mouse,” Luce adds. “There’s rumors that LeAnn Rimes reached out to our production manager, that she wants to come over and see our show. Which was kinda, I found that to be cool. But we're from Texas, she’s from Texas. So…”
Luce goes on to speculate McCombs and Rimes might sing a duet together.
“Yea,” McCombs says deadpan. “She’s a little bit country. I’m a little bit…”
