Small Plane Crashes At Golf Course

By Katie DeLong

NEW BERLIN - A golf course became a makeshift runway Friday. It happened at the New Berlin Hills Golf Course in Waukesha County. A small Cessna plane came bumping down the fairway, hit the 18th green and crashed into trees just a few feet from the clubhouse where dozens of golfers looked on in disbelief. The pilot of the Cessna managed to walk away from the crash with minor injuries. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Aaron Diamant: “This guy comes crashing down in the middle of your tournament." “Yeah, we’re worried about the rain falling on our head today and a plane comes down,” New Berlin Mayor Jack Chiovatero said. The crash happened about a half hour before New Berlin's mayor and dozens of other golfers got set to tee-off at a charity tournament. "When I saw it actually hit the front of the 18th green, bounce up a little bit, land a little bit on the 18th green, take another hop and actually hit the trees, I was kind of in shock of what I was seeing,” New Berlin Hills Golf Course General Manager John Rader said. Most were even more shocked to see the pilot get up and walk away with only a few cuts and bruises. "The guy just got up, dusted off his shoulders and walked out like it was no problem,” Nicole O’Leary said. The pilot told police he was on his way from Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee to Crites Field in Waukesha at about 2,000 feet when he had engine trouble and had to shut it down. The 18th fairway was the first clear spot he saw. "So he was coming down like a rock, he said, and so this is where he ended up,” New Berlin Police Officer Tony Fus said. Turning the tournament in a 17 hole scramble. "It's quite an event to have a plane come down on you. Last year I was trying to get out of here to catch a plane and now they're falling on top of us,” Mayor Chiovatero said. That would have been a real possibility if the plane went down a half hour later. Paramedics took the pilot to Froedtert Hospital to get checked out, more of a precaution than anything else. The FAA is investigating. The tournament went on as planned. Click on the link under related content to see a phone interview with witness Ray Brimm.
