Local NewsRaw Video: Storm Blamed For Church FireBy Katie DeLong
WAUKESHA COUNTY - A Waukesha County church is now nothing but charred wood and ashes.
Fire crews think lightning sparked the blaze.
It appears the Genesee Apostolic Tabernacle Church is a total loss. Now, neighbors are leaning on each other, remembering an historic place of worship.
The church sat in the same in the place for 100 years. People that near the church say seeing it burn down is like losing a trusted member of the community.
The cross atop the steeple came down Friday. It may be the only salvageable piece left of the Genesee Apostolic Tabernacle.
“Part of the town is now lost forever,” one neighbor said.
The century old church caught fire overnight Thursday. Fire officials say lighting may be the cause.
Amy Brown called 911 after seeing the church on fire.
“I said ‘oh my gosh, the lightning struck the church,’” Brown said.
The church population has dwindled in recent years. Neighbors say it’s down to about a dozen people, but still, the church means so much to those who say it is part of the landscape of the small town.
“It’s just sad to see some things change,” one neighbor said.
Firefighters say the building is a complete loss. It's not clear if church members will build again.
