MILWAUKEE - A 48-year-old woman was killed in an apartment fire over the weekend. Gail E. Washington's young grandchild was safely removed from the blaze. The woman was found on the bathroom floor of her burning apartment on the city's north side. Authorities determined Washington may have hit her head on a metal shelf in the bathroom upon discovering smoke from the fire. Her body was found in front of a bathroom door. She was pronounced dead at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. The 2-year-old child was taken to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for evaluation, fire officials said. Authorities said there was no working smoke detector inside the apartment. They were still investigating a cause.
