FORT ATKINSON - Dozens of people are homeless after a fire ripped through an apartment complex. Click on the link under related content to see video from the scene. It happened in Fort Atkinson Thursday morning. As many as 70 people are homeless Thursday afternoon. The damage from the fire is a difficult sight for residents to see. “Very, very scary,” Ray Mayans said. Mayans had a frightening wake up call. “I heard a pounding on my door ‘get out there's a fire!’” Mayans said. That's what he heard and he saw flames shooting out the top of his apartment. Mayans had just moved in two weeks ago. Now, there's not much left. Chopper 4 with power zoom got video of the aftermath. The fire spread very, very quickly. By the time I arrived it was on the east side of the building but within a matter of minutes it had gone to the middle of the complex,” Fort Atkinson Fire Captain Mark Schoelenber said. People in all 32 apartments got out safely. They ran out without their most personal belongings, items Mayans says can be replaced. “It may take awhile to get back to a normal life, but at least we have a life to get back to,” Mayans said. It's going to be at least a day before residents can get back inside their apartments. Some people will never get back in because their apartments are a total loss. Fire crews are still determining what caused the fire.
