Someone broke into Wally's Auto Salvage on Highway 33 looking for diesel fuel and gasoline.
According to Sheriff Todd Nehls, the suspects brought three gas containers and two hoses to siphon the fuel. They took gas from a 20 foot boat that was for sale and a shift loader belonging to the owner.
Then, it appears they made a big mistake. Nehls thinks one of the thieves lit a cigarette.
“When they tried to light that cigarette, he ignited his coat, his skin or even the fumes ignited and caused a great fire," Nehls said.

The boat and shift loader were destroyed. The salvage yard owner told TODAYS TMJ4 that he found lots of evidence when he arrived at the scene, including a cigarette butt.
Sheriff Nehls expects to see more of these thefts as fuel prices rise.
“I anticipate there will be more types of theft like this. Either siphoning from other people’s equipment or siphoning from other people’s tanks."
