Raw Video: Two Scammers Try To Cash In Bogus Tax Returns

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee man and woman tried to scam the IRS by claiming they worked at a Catholic non-profit group. Their plan fell through, and now they're facing jail time. They're accused of a complicated scheme, busting into an H&R Block tax place and stealing documents so they could cash in bogus tax returns...for jobs that didn't even exist. The two scammers pretended to work for several companies, including local printing business "My personal thought is, it's a lot easier to go get a job and make money than try to scam other people who are hardworking, making it on their own,” Steve Iggens, CFO of Kubin-Nicolson said. Click on the link under related content to see an interview with Kubin-Nicolson CFO Steve Iggens. Here's how it worked: the scammers allegedly stole information about companies from an H&R Block. They used that info to fake W-2 forms, claiming they worked there, and they end up collecting the tax refund check. One of the businesses they used in their scam: the non-profit Catholic Knights. The IRS found W-2 forms from the fake workers along with the real employees at Kubin-Nicholson. "The other 4 or 5 people that were brought forth were fake people we've never heard of before in our lives, and W-2s we did not issue,” Iggens said. The suspects didn't answer when TODAY’S TMJ4’s Michael George knocked on their door. We're not naming them, because they haven't been charged. The scammers apparently had a big clientele. According to court documents, as many as 10 people cashed in on the bogus tax returns.
