McGee's State Trial On Hold

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - Just as the state trial against former Milwaukee alderman Michael McGee was set to begin, Judge Dennis Moroney brought it to a screeching halt again. “There has been an awful lot of expense spent on this case. I'm not happy about it,” Judge Moroney said. McGee’s attorney claimed the prosecutors were keeping evidence from a key witness from them and Moroney agreed. The evidence in question is wiretap conversations in Arabic between a federal agent and a key state witness against McGee. Moroney scolded prosecutors for failing to turn over all the evidence to the defense team. “The Arabic factor is becoming the most important factor in the case,” Judge Moroney said. McGee faces 10 felony charges: two for conspiracy to have a man beaten, eight for elections fraud. His attorney accused state and federal prosecutors of working together to frame McGee, comments he defended outside of court. “I did say that didn't I,” defense attorney Larry Jarrett said, outside of court Tuesday. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Ty Milburn: “Yes. Do you have follow up on that?” “No,” Jarrett said. District Attorney John Chisholm supported the judge's decision to halt the case, but he denied any secret plot to frame McGee. “I wouldn’t comment on that at all. We do joint investigations all the time and they result in tremendous benefits for the community,” Chisholm said. The jury that was picked Monday has been dismissed. A new jury will be selected when the state trial resumes. A new trial date has not been set. But McGee is not in the clear; his federal trial is scheduled to begin next month.
