God and Grease: College Grads On A Mission

  • Print
MILWAUKEE - They've got a big bus and big plans for the summer! That's because the Wisconsin guys are on a mission and a higher calling to do more with their lives. With gas prices so high it might seem a little unorthodox to embark on a cross-country bus tour right now, but Nick Cocalis and Andy Atwell believe they have God and grease on their side. "Our tour bus runs on 100 percent waste vegetable oil," said Cocalis. "So we go around the country filing up at your local restaurants." The Marquette graduates started a non-profit group called Next Step Ministries. "Our goal is not only to bring students to grow in their faith, but to mobilize them to extend that service worldwide," Cocalis said. Their mission trips will vary, but they will include building homes for people still struggling from Hurricane Katrina. Both men say mission trips changed their lives. "This is a lot of fun," said Atwell, "We are changing a lot of lives. We thought, why not make this a career for our entire lives and try to help thousands of people." On Monday, Next Step begins its cross-country recruiting trip trying to get students to sign up for 40 different missions trips. "Our trips for the students range from $400 to $500," said Cocalis. There will be individual trips for junior high, high school and college age students. "Next Step is really the idea of taking that next step, for a lot of people that is, in their faith," said Atwell. The mission trips are set for the summer of 2009.
