Local NewsBlack Bear In Wauwatosa?By Katie DeLong
WAUWATOSA - A man reports seeing a bear roaming around in Wauwatosa, and wildlife experts believe it's completely possible.
After all, it happened before.
Is there a bear on the loose in Wauwatosa?
A resident made this 911 call, claiming he caught the bear lurking around his birdfeeder.
Caller: "I know this is going to sound crazy, but I just saw a black bear in my yard."
The man's family said he doesn't want to speak on camera about what he saw. He claims the bear fled the scene, racing across Mayfair Road, past a church, and into the woods.
"I think it could be real. It still would be kind of unbelievable, though,” neighbor Beth Dennik said.
"Over the years, we've seen a lot of wildlife, especially deer. So it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bear spotting,” neighbor Carol Crowe said.
Authorities haven't found any evidence of a bear in Wauwatosa, but they're not ruling it out because a bear was spotted there once before.
A black bear caused a panic back in 2005 when he appeared at 114th and Burleigh. He lead police on a chase up a tree before a tranquilizer dart brought him crashing down.
Residents are hoping if there is another bear, he stays in the woods.
"I think if my kids wanted to go down there I’d be a little hesitant right now,” Dennik said.
So far, no one else has reported seeing the bear. but according to the witness, it's a medium-size black bear, and he reportedly likes bird feeders.
Anyone who spots the bear should contact authorities.
