Local NewsFlowers Stolen From Cemetery GravesitesBy Katie DeLong
CUDAHY - Someone is stealing flowers from gravesites at Sepulcher Cemetery in Cudahy.
Alot of people put out flowers and flags at their loved ones' gravesites. Many think it's a sign of love and respect.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Heather Shannon talked to one woman who says thieves here have reached a new level of disrespect.
Cemeteries are supposed to be a tranquil place where loved ones can rest in peace, but Lynnette Hulgan says her grandmother's memory is being overshadowed by thieves who are stealing from her gravesite.
“It’s just unbelievable that someone would do that. This is someone that meant a lot to us. Again, we're honoring their memory, and they're being violated,” Hulgan said.
Hulgan put a floral arrangement on her grandmother's headstone. It was gone almost immediately.
“We were shocked, we were surprised,” Hulgan said.
Even more surprising is who the cemetery says is responsible.
Butch Miller is the director of operations for Sepulcher. He says middle aged women are stealing the fake flowers to make crafts. He's seen it happen, and has actually talked to some of these so-called crafters about what they're doing, but Miller says they always get away before police can arrive.
“They feel they can help themselves, absolutely not, no. We won't stand for it, and we're just asking them to please stop doing that,” Miller said.
Hulgan doesn't care who's stealing from her grandmother's grave, she just wants her grandmother's memory to be respected, and she wants the park to do more to stop this from happening again.
“This is the memory of my grandma. She knows what we've done, and she's watching over us, and more importantly there are folks up there watching down who knows who took these as well,” Hulgan said.
Cudahy police are also investigating.
