Exclusive: Racism Allegations In Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK - A TODAY’S TMJ4 Exclusive: allegations of racism in Sheboygan County.
It happened in Silver Creek.
An African-American business owner says he received a racist letter in the mail. The threatening letter contained a picture of a noose.
The business owner owns Random Elegance, a cafe and night club that opened up about a year and a half ago. It is the first African-American owned business in Silver Creek's history.
The African-American business owner, who didn’t want his name used or face shown, moved to Silver Creek from Milwaukee to open a restaurant and night club.
"In the beginning I think it was an adjustment,” the business owner said.
He and his wife wanted their young daughter to grow up in the country, and loved the school system.
"It's beautiful, it's very well kept, it's clean, and the people are friendly,” the business owner said.
However, someone in Silver Creek didn't want him there, and sent a racist and threatening letter.
"It seemed to be racial. It used the “N” word on numerous occasions. Described their displeasure with him being in the community,” said Captain David Adams of the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department.
The letter contained a picture of a noose and made specific threats.
“Very disturbing. Actually a hate letter,” Captain Adams said.
The owner admits being a black business owner in a rural area isn't easy, but says he won't focus on who wrote the letter. Also, he’s quick to point out the majority of the people in Silver Creek have been very open and welcoming. He wants to use the letter as inspiration to make his business even better.
“If you make the decision to leave, it should be your decision. What’s more important is enjoying the customers who want to see you succeed and making sure you don’t disappoint them,” the business owner said.
The person who wrote that threatening letter could face disorderly conduct or harassment charges.
