Uriel Gomez ACLU Involved In Prom Court CaseBy Katie DeLong
RACINE – The American Civil Liberties Union is now involved in the dispute over the prom court at Racine Park High School.
Uriel Gomez is openly gay.
He ran for prom queen, but the school won’t allow it.
The ACLU wrote a letter to the school arguing that decision violates federal law.
He's fit to be king…but he wants to be the queen, and that's causing a prom court controversy.
Park High School in Racine has never seen anything like this before: a gay male student nominated for prom queen.
That had people up in arms.
Eighteen year old Uriel Gomez is an openly gay senior at Park High School in Racine. Earlier this week, several of Gomez’s classmates nominated him to a short list of seniors who might get on prom court.
The only problem: Gomez's name landed on the short list of girls, making him eligible to be prom queen.
Gomez was willing to become the first male prom queen at the school, but his classmates had mixed reactions
“I think that it is a woman's place to be prom queen, but I completely support Uriel and I think that he should more than anything be prom king,” Jessie Tomsett said.
“Uriel's a great person and he's one of my greatest friends but it's prom and it's just a difficult situation,” Cassy Aslani said.
“I support him all the way…so go Uriel!” Emily Richow said.
Late Thursday, school administrators decided to take Gomez’s name out of consideration for queen. They said that would just not be appropriate.
He is now one of five finalists for prom king.
TODAY’S TMJ4 tried, but was unable to reach Gomez for comment.
Prom is May 17.
