Local NewsNew Airline Service Slated For MilwaukeeBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - Got a business meeting in Rhinelander, Ironwood, MI or Manistee, MI? You’re in luck. Great Lakes Airlines plans to start flights out of Milwaukee to those three communities as early as late May.
These are routes previously operated by Midwest subsidiary Skyway. Midwest dropped the routes when they contracted its Midwest Connect regional service to Utah-based Skywest.
Ironwood and Manistee will be government subsidized routes under the Essential Air Service program. Great Lakes built their business on EAS service. A company spokesperson says 95 percent of their routes operate under this program. The Wyoming-based airline links small communities to major hubs St. Louis, Kansas City, Phoenix, Albuquerque and Denver.
Great Lakes plans to lease two Beechcraft 1900 turboprop planes for its Milwaukee based service, possibly the exact same aircraft Skyway used on the routes. They will offer two daily round-trips to Rhinelander, Ironwood, MI and Manistee, MI.
The planes will fly with the Great Lakes logo, but a codeshare agreement with Midwest is under negotiation. The company plans to hire as many as 10 employees in Milwaukee for ground operations. The pilots will come from Great Lakes current staff. There will be no flight attendants on these flights.
