MILWAUKEE - A male Canada goose maintains his spot in the Milwaukee River despite a stiff current. He paddles effortlessly keeping a watchful eye on the Riverwalk above.

A group of theater-goers pause momentarily beneath the Saint Paul Avenue Bridge and the goose begins squawking. Then he flies up out of the river and seemingly takes a swipe at them. The tourists get the message and move along without noticing a female goose sitting atop a nest adjacent to the Riverwalk. The scene has been repeated often in recent days, leading to calls to the Wisconsin Humane Society.
“The head of the Third Ward called us,” Scott Diehl of the Humane Society said. “Some people on the Riverwalk being accosted, if you will, by a Canada goose.”
So, the Humane Society put up signs warning passersby of the goose family. They also put up protective orange netting around the nest. Diehl says there isn’t any reason for us to stay away from the Riverwalk.
“Just keep moving,” Diehl said. “Just keep moving past the nest and Pop should be fine.”
Diehl expects the geese to hatch inside of three weeks. He says the Humane Society will step in with a ramp if needed, so the baby geese can come down from their elevated nest.
