Fox River In Burlington Above Flood Stage
By Lauren Leamanczyk
BURLINGTON - The Fox River in Burlington is already above flood stage. Its waters are seeping into backyards and parks.
Melissa Micke lives along the river. She noticed major growth in the river Monday morning.
“It got real bad this morning when it started coming down real hard," Micke said, referring to the rain.
Micke hoped her home would be spared flooding. Micke's house sits higher above the river, but already Monday evening, her basement had a few puddles.
Nearby, at Hwy 11 and Hwy J, Amanda Koenecke was less optimistic as she waited for more rain.
“We’re kind of waiting on bated breath. We’re hoping for the best, but expecting the worst," Koenecke said.
Koenecke's basement has flooded every year since recent roadwork on Hwy 11. As of Monday night, her three sump pumps were working overtime.
“In our back field you can see the little river starting which all comes right our way. Runs through our garage. Wrecks our garage and everything in it," Koenecke said.
Plumbers in Burlington say they're not getting too many calls for flooded basements yet, but they expect that to change once the river crests.
