The first was in the town of Brookfield.
Lighting blew out the basement window and started a fire inside. People in the neighborhood heard the boom.
“It was like an explosion. I mean, I’ve never heard a bomb before, but I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. It wasn't a normal lightning crash,” Diane Quirk said.
Quirk lives next door, right by where the lightning struck.
Another neighbor heard it all too.
“A boom! Just a quick, like a flash,” Maria Schloemer said.
Schloemer lives across the street and went to check it out. Her husband dialed 911.
“Luckily I went over when I did, because then when I heard the sirens, the smoke started coming up,” Schloemer said.
The fire department thinks the lightning hit the window and made a huge hole, then traveled up the yard toward the house, splattering mud everywhere and went in through the basement. The inside of the house has serious smoke damage.
In New Berlin, TODAY’S TMJ4 was on the scene as firefighters arrived to check out the lightning strike.
Julie Neary lives next door and was looking out her window.
“There was no thunder. There was no lightning anywhere in the area, just one bolt and it hit the top of them,” Neary said.
The lightning hit the roof and caused some damage.
In both of these cases, the concern for firefighters was to make sure the lightning didn't ignite a small fire that could smolder and get bigger later. They spent time looking carefully in the attic making sure there is no more danger.
