Local NewsGetting Back To Normal At Mitchell AirportBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - There are still problems at the airport. Passengers stranded by Friday’s storm were just coming and going Monday.
Things were getting back to normal at Mitchell International Airport Monday, and many passengers were relieved after what was a long weekend for some of them.
Cheryl and Bernard Kallman finally got home Monday night.
"We ended up having three extra nights in Vegas that we hadn't planned on,” Cheryl Kallman said.
They were supposed to come home Friday. Staying extra days cost money and valuable time with their grandson.
"We had to miss his birthday and I was frantically calling saying ‘we're thinking of you. We're thinking of you,’” Kallman said.
Midwest Airlines says most stranded passengers have now managed to get to their destinations. For many that meant waiting until Monday.
The board at Mitchell looked a lot more promising Monday than it did for those trying to fly out on Friday.
"When the airport was cancelled at 10, we called in and spent hours on the phone trying to get another flight, and the earliest that was available was Monday night at 10,” Nancy Arnold said.
Lauren Bennett had to drive from Spring Green and back in the storm.
"They said it was going to be a two hour delay, and then I think it was 7 when the airport closed and everyone got in line to reschedule flights,” Bennett said.
The Wisconsin native who now lives in Denver wasn't complaining.
"I was actually like ‘okay cool! I get to stay home for a couple extra days,’” Bennett said.
Friday was the start of an especially busy weekend for travel because of Easter and spring break. When the airport closed Friday night, more than 200 people slept there.
