Local NewsFlights Resume At Mitchell AirportBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - Flights are taking off again at Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport on Saturday.
Spokeswoman Pat Rowe says the first flights started leaving Saturday just before 10 a.m. She says about 200 people had to spend the night after the airport closed on Friday due to the heavy snow.
More than 12 inches of snow fell Friday, meaning Milwaukee residents have officially experienced the second-snowiest winter on record.
According to the National Weather Service, Milwaukee has gotten 96.9 inches of snow this winter. But there's still a ways to go to the record -- almost 110 inches, set in 1886.
At the airport, officials canceled all flights about 6:30 p.m. following continuous heavy snowfall.
The cancelations came as a huge disappointment to travelers, many of whom realized their vacation plans had been ruined.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do now. I don’t know if I can get my money back or what," said Vicki Jackson whose flight to Los Vegas was scrapped.
Rowe says some Saturday flights are still being canceled because planes couldn't get into Milwaukee on Friday night.
“Can’t do anything about the weather," said an optimistic Marcia DeJonghe. She was planning to be at the airport for 24 hours before flying out.
The airport closed after heavy, wet, continuous snowfalls prevented crews from keeping up with plowing the runways on Friday.
"We were able to open for 20 to 25 minutes at a time, but no one could fly out because of visibility. Every airline has their own rules as to what they can and cannot fly in," Airport Spokesperson Ryan McAdams said.
It was one of the worst times for the airport to close, as many people were traveling for Easter and spring break.
"There's never a good time for an airport closure but we really want to get people to where they're going," McAdams said.
The airport came up with blankets and pillows for people who stayed at the airport overnight.
