Good Samaritans Rescue Van Driver

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - Three good Samaritans rescued a driver from a smoking We Energies van that crashed Thursday afternoon. That van came down a hill off I-94 near State Fair Park and wedged against a fence. Three guys ripped out a whole section of that fence, just in time to save the driver before the van caught fire. "I was in my backyard when I heard a boom,” Ivan Menore said. Menore saw the van break through the guard rail and come careening down the hill. "It was already filling up with smoke pretty good and the driver looked like he was passed out,” Menore said. Menore and two other witnesses knew they had only minutes to save the driver. They ripped out part of the fence to get to him. "We had to drag him out of there. We didn't have him out of there longer than two minutes and that whole thing went up,” Menore said. The driver’s side of the van is charred. Lee Boreson didn't even think twice about helping. "I just did what I had to do to help another person,” Boreson said. The 55-year-old driver was transported to the hospital but was treated and released.
