Local NewsPeople From North Woods Remember DillingerBy Katie DeLong
The Johnny Depp movie that's going to be filmed in Wisconsin is putting John Dillinger back in the spotlight.
The bank robber made the north woods of Wisconsin famous in the 1930s after he and his gang escaped from police and hid out there.
There are still people there who remember Dillinger well.
"There were bullet holes upstairs. One of the stories is that somebody was up on the roof with a machine gun,” Emil Wanatka said.
“There have been so many people looking for Dillinger's cash buried in the ground. There was never such a thing but it was good for advertising,” Cal Laporte said.
A submachine gun Dillinger grabbed from a Racine police officer is back on display at the Racine police station. The gun was recovered by authorities in Arizona in 1934.
Johnny Depp will play John Dillinger in the movie Public Enemies.
It's expected to hit the big screen next year.
