Man Gets 3 Years For Viewing Internet Sites

PORT WASHINGTON - A 31-year-old man facing trial on child pornography charges has been sentenced to three years in prison for violating the terms of his probation when he looked at online hosiery and swimsuit advertisements on a library computer. Court documents said James F. Lala of Grafton was released from jail on Jan. 9 and placed on probation, a condition of which was that he not go on the Internet. He had been put on probation after serving jail time on other child pornography charges and for a fight with another inmate. The court documents said a librarian at the Saukville Public Library called the Department of Corrections on Jan. 14 and reported that Lala had been looking at the pictures. Authorities said the librarian was familiar with Lala because he had been kicked out of the Saukville and Port Washington libraries numerous times after patrons complained he was viewing objectionable material. Defense attorney Frederick Van Hecke said the images that were viewed at the Saukville library did not rise to the level of pornography. But Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Joseph D. McCormack sentenced Lala on Monday to three years in prison followed by three years of extended supervision for violating his probation. Lala is scheduled to go to trial April 1 on four other child pornography possession charges, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 3 1/2 years in prison.
