Huge Turnout At Fundraiser For Local Student

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - A huge turnout Sunday for a fundraiser for a local student. She has a rare disease which she's trying to overcome, with a little help from her friends. For Amy Brudnicki, it was no ordinary day at the spa. Friends and family gathered at Serenity Day Spa in Waukesha Sunday afternoon, for a fundraiser for the 21-year-old. “It’s actually a little overwhelming. It's just so amazing that so many people care about me,” Amy Brudnicki said. Amy has a rare condition called transverse myelitis. The disease paralyzed her from the waist down. The symptoms came on suddenly over a year ago. It started with headache and nausea, then pain that traveled from her back, to the front of her body. “And within 24 hours she was paralyzed from the waist down,” Amy’s mom Julie Brudnicki said. Amy has a walker to get around and braces, but usually uses wheelchair. She needs hours of physical therapy, and is trying to raise money for a stimulator bike that helps with rehabilitation. The cost of that: $15,000. Amy's mother says they are so thankful for the people who turned out, to help them raise money. “As a parent, you can't ask for anything more than to have support and love shown to your child when they're going through a hard time,” Julie Brudnicki said. With the right treatment, Amy is determined to beat this disease. “Anything's possible and if you work hard, you should get better,” Amy Brudnicki said. Sunday's fundraiser raised thousands of dollars to help Amy.
