Local NewsFire At Templeton Middle SchoolBy Katie DeLong
TOWN OF LISBON - A thousand students were evacuated from Templeton Middle School in the Town of Lisbon because of a fire.
Some parents were worried because their kids had to wait outside in the frigid cold.
School was canceled in the middle of the day because of the fire, and in the rush of the evacuation, students didn't have their coats.
They were cold.
Many of these students were not dressed to wait outside during an evacuation…some even in short sleeves.
“It was very cold. Some kids were complaining a lot and they were trying to keep warm and trying to huddle…like my class, they were hugging each other just to stay warm,” Sebastian Giovannini said.
The students waited outside without their coats before being sent to a nearby church and the Hamilton High School.
“My son walked over there in a sweatshirt. It's below zero wind chills out here. It's ridiculous,” Jacqueline Giovannini said.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Mick Trevey: “Was it dangerous for these kids to be outside in these temperatures?”
“The students were not out for a long period of time: 5 to 8 minutes, 10 minutes, and they immediately were sent to the school or the church,” Hamilton District Superintendent Kathleen Cooke said.
The fire happened in an electrical panel when a fuse blew. There wasn't much smoke and there isn't much damage, but the panel controls the ventilation system for the building which is why the school canceled class for the rest of the day.
Once it was all over, some parents thanked school leaders.
“I know that they had places to go. They informed us where the kids were going, and I know the end result that the kids were fine,” one parent said.
