ELKHORN - At the wife poisoning trial in Elkhorn, Thursday, we heard from Mark Jensen for the first time. He's accused of killing his wife Julie. His defense claims she killed herself. This was a big day in the Jensen trial. This trial is in its seventh week, but Mark Jensen has never spoken in court before now. Just before we heard from Mark Jensen for the first time, the defense rested its case. Before the state was allowed to call their rebuttal witnesses, Judge Bruce Schroeder asked Mark Jensen several questions about whether or not he wanted to testify in his own defense. Judge Bruce Schroeder: "Do you understand what your options are at this point?" Mark Jensen: "Yes sir." Judge Bruce Schroeder: "Is your mind clear today?" Mark Jensen: "Yes." Jensen is accused of killing his wife, but the defense says she was severely depressed and killed herself, framing Mark because he was cheating on her. Despite Jensen’s attorney telling the court Jensen would not testify in his own defense, the judge just wanted to make sure that was what Jensen wanted. Judge Bruce Schroeder: "Is it your desire that you not testify in this case?" Mark Jensen: "Yes sir." The state began calling their rebuttal witnesses Thursday afternoon. The state is expected to call a few more witnesses Friday. Both sides agree closing arguments should happen Monday, with the jury getting the case early next week.
