Police Chief Edward Flynn said two officers that are part of the anti-gang unit for District 7 were in the neighborhood when they stopped the man to ask for identification. The man had his hand in his pocket, and when the officers asked him to remove it, the man produced a revolver.
There was an apparent exchange of gunfire, and the officers shot the man. The officers administered CPR at the scene and called for medical help.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers are aged 27 and 28 and have four and three years of experience. They have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure.
“We have courageous officers that understand the need to protect life as well as to save it. They understood deadly force was necessary, but they also tried to save him,” Police Chief Edward Flynn said.
Chief Flynn said it is unknown if the man is a gang member.
The district attorney and the homicide unit are on the scene investigating. Some witnesses have also been identified.
