Digging Out In Milwaukee, Day After Storm

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - Hundreds of Milwaukeeans have stories to tell about battling the biggest snowstorm of 2008 so far. More than a foot of heavy, wet, slippery snow made driving, walking and of course shoveling a real chore. TODAY’S TMJ4 has video showing what it was like trying to cross the Hoan Bridge in the snow. Many cars got stuck as a result of the heavy snowfall. Some cars got ticketed or even towed. All morning long on Thursday, tow trucks were trying to remove cars off the streets so snow plows can come through and clean up. Over on Oakland Avenue on the east side, cars got ticketed for not obeying snow emergency parking restrictions. Many areas declared a snow emergency, so cars are not supposed to be on many roads. Speaking of clean-up, the plows were out battling Mother Nature late into the night Wednesday, after the snow ended. “This is probably the worst. It's a difficult snow. It’s heavy and heavier snow holds more moisture,” Milwaukee County DPW’s John Vozar said. Milwaukee Department of Public Works’ Cecilia Gilbert says “the city is open for business.” Gilbert says as of 4:30 Thursday morning, 100 percent of the main streets were plowed and salted. DPW will do more salting on the main streets throughout the day Thursday. DPW only got to 50 percent of the side streets Wednesday night. They were hampered by the heavy, wet snow and residents not following the parking rules. Several DPW trucks got stuck overnight and other equipment had to be used to free them. Cecilia Gilbert says there are 200 pieces of equipment still out on the roads. The goal is to have all side streets done by the time people get home from work Thursday night. If your street is still not plowed by Thursday night, call 286-CITY to report it. DPW says garbage pickup resumes Friday.
