Jensen Trial: Interview With Mark Jensen

By Katie DeLong

ELKHORN - Mark Jensen was interviewed by Pleasant Prairie police a couple months after his wife Julie died. Detective Paul Ratzburg: "What happened that morning before you left?" Mark Jensen: “She could hardly sit up in bed." Jensen described his wife's deteriorating health. Mark Jensen: “She was not able to get out of bed. I mean, she was groggy, almost incoherent, breathing was very labored, raspy." Detective Ratzburg repeatedly accused Mark Jensen of killing his wife, which he denied. Detective Paul Ratzburg: “You had to do something to cause her death, Mark. You're the only person that was there, and you're the only person that could have done anything." Mark Jensen: "I did not Paul." The interview was several hours long, and at the end of it, Jensen told Ratzburg he believed Julie was trying to poison him. Detective Paul Ratzburg: “You thought she was giving you some poison?" Mark Jensen: “Exactly. I would take something and I would be heaving, you know, in 15 minutes." When detective Ratzburg told Mark Jensen Julie had been smothered to death, Jensen admitted rolling her over, but said several times that he did not kill his wife. The defense says she killed herself.
