Nine Hospitalized Over Carbon Monoxide Concerns

By Katie DeLong

STURTEVANT - Nine people went to the hospital overnight Wednesday over concerns of carbon monoxide poisoning. What happened to the family should get all of our attention. January is when more people die of carbon monoxide than any other time of the year, and there are some things all of us should do to protect ourselves. It was a scary night for a family inside a Sturtevant house. They believe dangerous carbon monoxide got into their house and made them sick. The Sturtevant Fire Department responded, and initially showed there was carbon monoxide at the home, but after venting out the house, there isn't any more, and the family has no idea where it could have come from. “We don't always find the exact cause. We'll check your appliances and check everything but we don't always find the exact origin,” Mike Mansell of the Sturtevant Fire Department said. There are a few things people can do to prevent carbon monoxide problems. The fire department says you should have a professional check out your furnace every year just to make sure it's working correctly. You should also check your dryer vent to make sure the tubing is clear and there's no lint blocking the air flow. The fire department also says you should check around dryer vents and furnace vents outside because if you see soot around them, that could indicate a problem inside. The family that had the scare Wednesday night went to Wheaton All Saints Hospital and they were put on oxygen. A doctor says another sign of trouble is if a number of people in a house all start feeling sick. “Early on, people can have a light headache, some nausea, they may have some dizziness, and they're not sure why they're having these symptoms, and commonly, the whole family can be involved, not just one individual,” Thomas Kirages of Wheaton All Saints said. The other thing firefighters say we all should keep in mind: never start your car and leave it running in an attached garage. Always pull the car away from your house if you want to let it warm up for a minute.
