MPS Violence Free Zone Program Working

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - MPS plans to announce Thursday that a plan to reduce violence at high schools is working. North Division High School is one of four high schools that launched the Violence Free Zone program at the beginning of the school year, and MPS reports violence, disruptions and suspensions are down. The Violence Free Zone plan puts mentors inside schools. They target kids stumbling into trouble and redirect them toward improving attendance and boosting grades. A Washington-based group developed the model and they have similar programs at work in other major city school districts like Atlanta, Baltimore and Dallas. MPS launched its first Violence Free Zones at Marshall and South Division back in 2006 and added the four additional high schools in fall 2007. Superintendent William Andrekopolous along with the president of that Washington-based group that developed the Violence Free Zone will unveil results at the Intercontinental Hotel downtown at 11 Thursday morning.
