Holiday Credit Card Scam
By Katie DeLong
SHEBOYGAN COUNTY - Just in time for the holidays, a new scam is trying to get your hard earned cash.
In fact, these scammers are hoping you're in the holiday mood.
It starts with an automated call that says your credit card has been suspended.
Sounds legit, but it's not.
“The message indicated that there was a problem with their credit cards and they needed to call immediately to get the problem rectified,” Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Lt. James Risseeuw said.
The scammers ask you to call back an 800 number. They want your credit card and pin numbers.
“In most cases people did not provide all the information for people to use their credit cars but in one case someone did provide information and did almost immediately lose just under a thousand dollars,” Lt. Risseeuw said.
So what can you do to keep these scammers away?
Never give out your credit card number unless you originated the call.
If you're asked to call an 800 number, check your billing statement to see if that is the same number.
If you've been scammed cancel your credit card right away.
Keep in mind scammers are in a holiday mood. They know people need their credit cards.
