Shoppers Come Out For Midnight Madness

By Katie DeLong

KENOSHA COUNTY - Bargain hunters turned out in large numbers at the outlet mall in Kenosha County Thursday night for Midnight Madness. The outlet mall opened at midnight Thursday, and several people turned up to wait in line for the midnight opening. It just goes to show how far people will go for a deal. Wisconsin’s minimum markup may mean you’ve got to cross the state line to find the best deal. Cindy Oleniczak will sit in the cold for a deal. A few years ago, that meant waiting in line for a DVD player at Wal-Mart. “I went to Illinois and I got it for $80 something. In Wisconsin it was $99.99,” Oleniczak said. Cheaper in Illinois? It’s not because the Wal-Mart is run by Bears fans. Wisconsin’s minimum markup law forbids retailers from selling items below cost. The ads may look the same in Illinois and Wisconsin. They are. But in so many cases, the devil is in the details. You find it in the small print. One ad says “prices may vary.” It lists a handful of states including Wisconsin. The point of the law is to keep the big stores from taking over the little guys with super low prices. The savvy shopper doesn’t like it. “I think that’s not fair because what if you want it a hundred dollars cheaper? You’ve got to drive to Illinois?” Lisa Pylkas said. Other bargain hunters will do whatever it takes to find a deal. Usually when you hear about the minimum markup law, it applies to gasoline. Some Wisconsin lawmakers plan to try to get it repealed.
