Hospital Patients Have Identities Stolen

By Erin Drew Kent

MEQUON - TODAY'S TMJ4 has learned several patients at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon had their identities stolen. A search warrant claims that a man working at the hospital stole information from people living in Ozaukee and Milwaukee counties over a period of nine months. Columbia St. Mary's hospital didn't even know about the investigation until Melanie Stout of TODAY'S TMJ4 called them Friday morning. The man was still working at the hospital in Environmental Services, but was suspended without pay after TODAY'S TMJ4 brought the information to the hospital's attention. TODAY'S TMJ4 made several attempts to get a comment from the suspect but he would not speak with us. At one point a van from the man's home sped away from the TMJ4 photojournalist. Investigators say the worker gave the stolen information to a partner who would get online loans using the victim's names and transfer that money to debit cards to use at ATM's. Shara Cohen goes to St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon. She is stunned at the allegations. "It is very scary because that's why we sign those HIPAA forms. You can't even give your information to anyone else, I mean that's scary I take my children there for god's sakes. I know people can get credit cards in your name, it's very scary. I would be mortified, I mean that's a hospital, you're going there for health care." The Milwaukee County District Attorney office is considering charges in the case. This is a lengthy investigation because several people are involved in this highly sophisticated scheme. Columbia St. Mary's released a statement which reads in part: "We have not been contacted by any law enforcement regarding this matter. Had we been aware, we would have taken action sooner. Patient confidentiality is of the utmost concern to us." A spokesperson from Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon says they are conducting their own investigation to see what, if anything was stolen.
