MILWAUKEE - A 30-foot recreational sailboat ran aground north of Bradford Beach Sunday afternoon, trapping its two occupants in rocky shallows. The boat rocked and swayed in the waves while crowds gathered along the shore east of Lincoln Memorial Drive. Click on the link under related content to see video from the scene. "It could definitely be life-threatening," said Alex Guerrero, a boater and surfer who paddled out to the boat in his wetsuit to help rescue crews avoid the most shallow areas. "This water is so cold, you have twenty minutes, fifteen minutes tops, and that's a person that can swim very good, very athletic person, so this lake can easily kill people." A representative says it is not uncommon for boats to run aground there. "This is a known area," Guerrero said. "It's very shallow. It's about waist-deep as far as 200 yards." The Coast Guard has not yet identified the two boaters. Guerrero says they hail from the Czech Republic and planned to sail around the world next year. "It's a shame to see someone work so hard on something and dream so hard about something and then run aground just trying it out." The boat is expected to be towed out of the shallows Monday.
