MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett proposed building city wide surveillance cameras in high crime areas over a year ago. The installation process just began about a month ago. Twelve of the 15 proposed cameras are up, but only some are in operation.
Mayor Barrett says the cameras are already a success, because the camera at 27th and Wells caught a crime on tape.

"That’s exactly what we want to do. We want to use these cameras to make our neighborhoods safer,” Barrett said.
The suspect in the video was arrested for disorderly conduct. The mayor hopes more crimes will be caught on tape, but the eventual goal of the cameras is to deter crime from happening.
"Hopefully we’ll catch others. Even more hopefully, the cameras will deter individuals from committing criminal acts. That’s the eventual goal: if people know they’re there, they won’t commit crimes,” Barrett said.
