Displeasure Over Miller Beer Festival Poster
By Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE – If you look at it from a distance, a poster sponsored by Miller Beer promoting the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco may seem harmless. However, if you look more closely, you’ll see why it has people upset, and since the folks at Miller Brewing Company are involved with it, they’re taking some serious heat too.
The poster shows people in scandalous leather costumes posing like the Last Supper of Jesus, and Miller’s logos are right on the bottom. The poster shows people in masks, leather costumes and depicts sexual overtones designed to look like a scene from the Bible.
It’s an advertisement for the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, which is billed as a leather fetish fest. Miller Brewing is one of several companies sponsoring the festival.
The Catholic League wants people to boycott Miller products as a response to the promotional poster.
TODAY’S TMJ4 talked to some folks at Miller Park to see what they think. While many were shocked, not everyone thought it was a big deal.
“It seems like a disgrace to what most people think the Last Supper is,” Rebecca Gloudemans said.
“Whoo! Oh my God, uh huh, oh yeah, what’s so bad about it?” Anamae Barber said.
Miller responded by saying they asked festival organizers to remove the Miller logo from the poster, but they did not pull their sponsorship.
They said “we understand some individuals may find the imagery offensive and we have asked the organizers to remove our logo from the poster effective immediately.”
