Former Kenosha Sheriff Crashes Plane

TOWN OF BRISTOL - Fred Ekornaas, a Kenosha County Supervisor and former Sheriff was hurt after his plane flipped several times Friday night. He was trying to land the plane at the time when a wheel fell off. That sent the plane tumbling. The Sky Ranger II plane was totaled. The cockpit heavily damaged and the wings were twisted like a toy. The crash happened at the small Winfield Airstrip in the Town of Bristol in Kenosha County. Ekornaas' plane is a two-seater, but he was the only one onboard. He's a veteran pilot and is expected to survive the crash. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa for treatment. Ekornaas, 67, was reported to be conscious and stable, according to the sheriff’s department. He was hospitalized overnight, and released late Saturday afternoon. Ekornaas was sheriff from 1985 through 1988.
