Exclusive: Andy Meier Learning To Walk Again
By Mike Jacobs
When Andy Meier's tour bus plunged off a cliff into a ravine... thousands of miles from home... people thought he might not make it.
Now he's sharing the painful details of his recovery exclusively with TODAY's TMJ4.
We visited with Andy during a therapy session. It's hard work, just to do the simple things most of us take for granted. Lifting his feet is a struggle, but Andy hasn't lost his sense of humor.
"Pretty soon I'm going to break into an Irish dance," he chuckled while doing exercises.
Andy was critically injured in the Bosnia crash. He's now paralyzed from the chest down. He has no feeling in his legs, but we watched him learning how to walk again.
"I'm doing all right," he said. "Well, it's hard work. I'm getting better every day, Mike. That's a great thing."
Andy's newest challenge: Walking up steps. He coaxes his legs into action. It's exhausting, but he's positive.
"I've got to tell you that feels really good. Because eventually, I am going to be able to go up stairs," Andy Meier said.
On this day, he made it to the top.
At his side, every step of the way.. Andy's wife, Elizabeth. She's his greatest supporter, and the woman he lives for.
"If I didn't have my wife.. pause... I wouldn't have anything Mike," he told us with all honesty.
He attributes his survival to the power of prayer.
"The praying that everybody did for me. I think God finally said, 'Ok, I hear ya. Enough already,'" Meier said.
