Driver Sentenced For Killing Friend

By Tom Murray

MILWAUKEE - A 20-year-old Oak Creek man was sentenced today for a drunken driving crash that killed his friend. The victim's mother is upset about the punishment handed down. This is an example of how one bad decision can lead to a lot of hurt and sadness. An emotional sentencing hearing just finished. Four people were in this car when in crashed in May. Twenty-year-old Sarah Stachula died. She was a promising, talented athlete and college student from La Crosse. Facing up to 25 years in prison, the judge sentenced the driver, 20-year-old Nenad Paldrmic, to one year in the House of Correction with work release, then 10-years of probation. The victim's mother presented the judge with a picture of her daughter and read a Mother's Day card from Sarah during the sentencing hearing. Here's what the convicted driver had to say: “I'm truly sorry for the pain I’ve caused. I wake up everyday praying the good Lord would take me and bring back your daughter. No parent should have to out live their child and I’m truly sorry for it,” Paldrmic said. "The sentence wasn't right in my opinion. I think a year is like a slap on the hand when you take someone's life like my daughter Sarah. I just felt it should have been longer and I did ask for longer,” Lynette Girtler, the mother of the victim said. The judge put a 10-year prison sentence on hold. Padrmic will only serve those 10-years if he violates his probation. He had no prior record, and the judge felt this driver made a bad decision and felt true remorse. Sarah’s father told the court that he forgave Paldrmic for the fact it was an accident, but not for his decision to drive under the influence. He told the court he didn’t see any purpose in a jail sentence so long as other tough restrictions were imposed on Paldrmic.
