Deputy Kevin Johnson Another Sheriff's Deputy Hit By CarBy Melissa McCrady
WAUWATOSA - Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Johnson braced himself for the inevitable Wednesday night.
"I heard squealing tires then looked in my rear view mirror," Johnson said.
A man driving a car hit Johnson's squad car along Highway 45, just south of Burleigh Street.
Johnson was stopped, had his lights on and was about to get out of his squad to clean up another crash, when he was hit from behind.
"His exact quote out of his mouth was, 'He didn't see me.' I don't know how he didn't see me," Johnson said.
Johnson immediately thought of his younger brother, Tim, who is also a Milwaukee County Sheriffs Deputy.
In January, Tim Johnson nearly died after a car smashed into him while he was cleaning up a crash on I-94 near Miller Park. That crash has changed the way Deputy Kevin Johnson thinks.
"I think about it every night. Every night I get out of my car I think about it," he explained.
Now, he can't stress enough how important it is for drivers to pay attention and move over when squads are parked on the side of the road.
All he asks is to be able to do his job without worrying.
"I'm very thankful I was not injured and that I'm standing here today talking to you about it," he said.
Kevin's brother Tim has returned to the department and is slowly easing back into his former duties.
Just this week the department got helmets for deputies to wear on a voluntary basis in order to stay safe.
