Rehab Centers Turning People Away

By Michael George

MILWAUKEE - Several substance abuse centers in Milwaukee County are turning people away due to some big federal budget cuts. The county is limiting some rehab centers from admitting any new patients. The Matt Talbot Treatment Center has successfully treated people in Milwaukee for 40 years. Adam Golsteyn is one of its success stories. "I've been able to maintain sobriety, secondly, that allows me to be a productive member of society," Golsteyn said. The residential treatment center at 26th and North has had many similar stories. But the center is now in danger due to an 82 percent federal budget cut. "If we don't have funding, we are going to have to close our doors," said Patty Pendowski, supervisor of the center. Milwaukee County used to have 200 spaces open for substance abuse treatment. A few weeks ago, that number was cut to just 36. People with drug and alcohol problems are out of luck if they don't have the money or insurance for private-owned rehab. "Without places like Matt Talbot, where else do we have to turn to?" said Freddie Smith, who successfully completed a program at Talbot. Many people who have completed programs say if they were turned away, they might still be on the streets. County Executive Scott Walker told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George that the county does not have the funds to cover the huge federal budget cut. Treatment providers say they are hopeful they will get a new federal grant this year. But for now, many people looking for help will continue to be turned away.
