UPDATE: Stolen Special Bike Returned

By Melissa McCrady

7/20/07 UPDATE :
Joe Reinelt now has his bike back. Joe has a number of disabilities and someone stole his specially-made bike. A day after we reported the story, someone turned the bike into police anonymously.

MILWAUKEE - Someone stole a specially-designed bike from a disabled man in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood.

The man and his father used to go biking every day, but now they can't. And the worst part is, the victim still doesn't understand why.

Rarely does a day go by when Paul Reinelt, 60, and his adult son, Joe, are not riding their bicycles.

"How often do you and Joe use the bicycle?" TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Melissa McCrady asked.

"Every day. Absolutely every day unless there's a tremendous snow storm," Paul Reinelt said.

That was until one week ago when Joe's bicycle was stolen, but it's not just any bicycle. Joe is autistic and suffers from multiple handicaps. He can only ride a specialty bicycle with three wheels because he can't balance on other bikes.

"[His bike] doesn't tip over," Paul explained.

But last Wednesday the family learned that they had been taken for a ride.

"Someone jumped the fence and went in through our service door," Paul said.

The only thing missing was Joe's bicycle. Still, Joe wakes up every morning expecting to go on his daily bike ride.

"What he wants to do when he gets up in the morning is ride the bike. But it's not there. It's just not there," Paul said sadly.

Paul doesn't want any donations. He just wants his son's bike back where it belongs.

"I think it's a cheap shot. Someone had to have known it belonged to my son," he added.

If you see the bicycle or have any information call the Milwaukee Police Department's District 2 at 414 935-7222.
