Family Believes Missing Whitewater Student Alive

By Erin Drew Kent & Melissa McCrady

MADISON - The family of a missing college student has information to make them believe she’s alive.

Twenty-two-year-old University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student Kelly Nolan disappeared on June 23. She was last seen in downtown Madison, out with friends. Nolan is living and working in Madison for the summer.

Nolan’s mother, Mary Jane, and two sisters, Candice and April, are optimistic they’ll find her.

“Kelly is out there. She will be found,” mother Mary Jane Nolan said.

Her family met with Madison police detectives Tuesday morning. They won’t say what police told them about the investigation, but they insist it is positive news.

“A lot of information brings this smile and not tears. Kelly will be returned safely,” Mary Jane added.

Kelly NolanAccording to the family, Nolan was out with her friends in the downtown Madison area on a Friday night. Her friends went home around 11:30 p.m., but Nolan decided to stay out longer by herself.

She made an early morning phone call to her sister, April. That was the last time anyone heard from her.

The family will not divulge what Kelly Nolan said in that phone call, but they say she was not depressed and would never go anywhere without staying in touch with her family.

“Mary Jane, you’re so positive she’ll be found but are you positive she’ll be found alive?” TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Melissa McCrady asked.

“Absolutely. It doesn’t take but a second to believe,” Mary Jane replied.

It was a much different tone Monday as Mary Jane interviewed with TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George.

“I never thought it could be my daughter, and that’s why I can’t sleep, because it is my daughter, and she’s gone. I need her back,” Mary Jane said.

Mary Jane thinks someone knows where she is, and she is asking that person to come forward. Now they’re offering a reward to help bring Kelly home. Mary Jane will only say they’re offering a substantial reward, she won’t name a dollar amount.

Madison police will only say, “There is no evidence of foul play.”

"She’s a good kid, and she’s my daughter, and I miss her. And she belongs with me,” Mary Jane Nolan said.
