McGee Remains Behind Bars Despite Bail Post

By Heather Shannon & Lauren Leamanczyk

MILWAUKEE - Alderman Michael McGee is still in jail. He has been held since the Memorial Day weekend on state charges. A minister paid McGee's $50,000 state bail Thursday. But Friday, a federal judge ordered that McGee be held indefinitely on federal charges. The Milwaukee alderman made his initial appearance in federal court Friday on extortion and bribery charges. He's accused of shaking down business owners, seeking payment for favorable treatment from the city over licenses. His attorney on the federal charges said McGee expected to be released from jail after Friday's hearing. Instead, federal prosecutors asked that bail be denied. They say they don't want McGee to get out of jail at all until his trial is over. Surprisingly, McGee's attorney, federal defender Calvin Malone, did not argue for a lower bail. Instead, he said he needs more time to decide what bail should be set. But off camera, Malone said, "I don't understand why Mr. McGee is still in custody." Neither do McGee supporters, who Thursday posted $50,000 to bail him out of the Milwaukee County Jail on state charges. "I wouldn't want to be sitting up in jail," said Reverend Lee Ross Shack, the pastor of All God's Children Church where several McGee fundraisers were held. "I would want them to take up some money and get me out." At Nefertari Salon in McGee's district, residents said whether he's guilty or not, they believe his bail is unfair. "Everybody else that went to jail for the same stuff he's doing, they got out in like a week's time," said owner Angeline Smith. The NAACP also called the situation unfair. They pointed out that other Milwaukee aldermen accused of misconduct got out on bail. After McGee's state bail was posted Thursday, Shack hoped his alderman would be free and back in the 6th aldermanic district. "We know that he has done great things in the neighborhood," Shack said. "This is why it's so important that we get him out." McGee's attorney said off camera that he believes race is a factor as to why McGee remains behind bars. McGee is due back in federal court July 9. McGee was arrested over the Memorial Day weekend on state charges. Prosecutors said he tried to have a man beaten because that man broke into the home of one of McGee's relatives. Since then, the state has added a number of additional charges.
