Local NewsTess Corners Firefighters Share Special BondBy Courtny Gerrish
WAUWATOSA - Two Tess Corners firefighters have a bond because of what they do. Now, that bond is deeper because of what they share.
Rick Schaber has a new kidney, thanks to his friend and fellow firefighter Marty Rukavina. Rick is still amazed by his friend's unselfish gift. "You think would I do that for someone myself? It's got to be a hard decision to come up with."
Marty never doubted his offer to help. "Seeing him going through the disappointment of not getting the first kidney and watching him suffer, his health deteriorating."
Rick was on a donor list and was a match for a kidney, but it was harvested wrong and couldn't be used. "You're so close. You're laying in the bed ready to go in the operating room, and then, 'You can go home.'"
Rick suffered two more setbacks, and then Marty stepped in.
Wednesday's transplant surgery at Froedtert Hospital was a success. Marty can see the difference in Rick already, "He looks a lot better, a lot better than he did. His spirit picked up quite a bit."
When asked if they plan to hang out more now Marty replied, "Yea, I gotta watch over the kidney now."
