Ezeiquiel Lopez Murder Suspect Never Reported to Immigration 5/21/07By Michael George
KENOSHA - Ezeiquiel Lopez, the man accused of murdering Kenosha Sheriff's Deputy Frank Fabiano, is an illegal immigrant with arrests in four different states, according to authorities.
But immigration agents told TODAY'S TMJ4 that they had never heard of Ezeiquiel Lopez until his arrest last week.
The Kenosha County district attorney claimed Lopez has arrests in Utah, Missouri and Texas. He has also been arrested in Kenosha County for battery and disorderly conduct. But he was never referred to immigration.
A Kenosha Police Department spokesman said that is because Lopez was never known to be an illegal immigrant.
“He had identification cards; he had Social Security cards. It appears now that all those items are obviously fake,” said Lt. Ron Bartholomew, with the Kenosha Police Department.
Part of the reason the fake IDs were never caught, he said, is because Lopez' previous arrests in Wisconsin were all misdemeanors. Kenosha police typically don't investigate the immigration status of a suspect unless the crime is more serious.
Bartholomew said there is no good system in place for officers to check the legal status of a suspect.
“I think we do need to do a better job of checking things like this, and hopefully this will be the thing that will spring us forward,” he said.
Bartholomew said it takes a combined effort from lawmakers and law enforcement to come up with a standard for checking immigration status after someone is arrested.
It isn't just up to the police department to refer suspects to immigration. Prosecutors and the Department of Corrections could have referred Lopez as well. However, because he had seemingly legitimate IDs and Social Security cards, it was never known that he was an illegal immigrant until he was arrested for the murder of Deputy Fabiano.
