Is Any Pet Food Safe Anymore?

By Michael George

GLENDALE - In the latest addition to the pet food recall, cans of Roundy's Flaked Fish & Shrimp cat food were recalled Thursday. But on Friday, the recalled cans were still on the shelves at the Glendale Pick 'n Save, available for anyone to buy. As soon as TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George brought the cans to the manager's attention, the cans were removed. But it's getting harder for stores and customers to keep track of all the recalls. Right now, the pet food recall list has grown to more than 200 brands. So how do pet owners know which food is safe? "I didn't know what brands, what it was. Hopefully we're not feeding him the food," said pet owner Andrew Drehfal. Experts say consumers should check the ingredients label. "Any product that contains wheat gluten, you want to avoid those products or make sure the company is testing those products," said veterinarian Dr. Lisa Weiser at the Shorewood Animal Hospital. Not every pet food with wheat gluten is tainted, but contaminated gluten has been listed as the probable cause of the illness. The Glendale Pick 'n Save claims it has pulled the rest of its recalled pet food.
