Chaotic MPS Classroom Scuffle Posted Online

By Tom Murray & Jenn Rourke

MILWAUKEE - A fight at Pulaski High School, 2500 W. Oklahoma Ave., was caught on camera and posted on the popular video Web site YouTube.com.

Two students have already been disciplined for the fight, but administrators still want to know why a classroom full of kids was left without teacher supervision.

Roseann St. Aubin, communications and public affairs director for Milwaukee Public Schools, said the altercation would have likely been prevented if a staff member was present.

"The fact that there was a lack of supervision is a problem," said St. Aubin.

In the video, one boy gets in the face of another boy, verbally taunting him. The first boy pushes the second boy. Other students try to break them up. That doesn't work. The freshman boys throw punches and wrestle to the floor as they send desks flying. The fight ends when classmates appear to separate the boys for good.

The fight happened on March 22, according to the web posting. St. Aubin would not say what time of day or in what type of class the fight occurred.

One comment to the YouTube video says, "I'm paying taxes for these chumps to goto school? I guess I'll be used to it when it comes time to pay for their jail too."

Another reads, "Glad to see all these property taxes going to such fine learning institutions."

Punishment for the delinquent staff member or members could range from a sanction letter too firing.

It should also be mentioned that this fight was captured on a cell phone camera. Cell phones are banned in MPS schools. The girl who filmed the incident could face trouble for having the device in school.

In an unrelated incident at Pulaski, a teacher is being investigated for failure to notify authorities of a student with a weapon. Police and MPS officials were looking into whether or not a teacher saw a student with a gun but didn't report it to authorities quickly enough.

The teacher reportedly saw the gun fall out of an 18-year-old student's pocket. An unloaded gun was later found in the student's locker.
