MILWAUKEE - Two would-be robbers picked the wrong bar to rob.
The two men walked into Hank's Again Bar on Milwaukee's south side Tuesday evening. After sitting down for a beer, one of the men walked behind the bar and tried to steal money. That's when the workers and patrons fought back.
"I think most people would have left or ran or stayed out of it, but not this bar," said a regular customer named Nadine. She and others described the bar's regular clientele as a group that's like family.
The bartender, a woman in her 40's, fought the robber, eventually putting him in a headlock. Other customers helped hold the man down. So many piled on top of him, that when police got there, they couldn't even see the suspect.
Another regular customer fought the second bad guy. The customer said the suspect motioned like he had a gun, but he fought anyway.
"There was no thought about it, just get this taken care of," he told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Lauren Leamanczyk. That customer and the robber carried the fight outside.
The suspect fled, but not before the customer grabbed his coat off him. Inside was the suspect's I.D. Police have both men in custody. They are in their early 20's and may be connected to other area robberies.
As for the patrons of Hank's, one woman was hurt after the robber punched her in the face. The customer who got into a fist fight with the robber broke his toe. Police say they may give commendations to some of the brave patrons.
